With household energy costs remaining a major concern for families across the UK, finding practical ways to manage consumption has never been more important.
While many homeowners focus on turning down the thermostat or changing daily habits, the real driver of your baseline energy use is the structural performance of your property. A home that cannot hold onto its warmth forces your heating system to work twice as hard simply to stay comfortable.
At Emerald Windows and Doors, we’ve spent over a decade helping homeowners across Swindon and the surrounding area understand where their homes are losing heat – and what to do about it. Targeting the weak spots in your home’s thermal envelope is one of the most effective ways to bring energy bills down for good.
Before considering any upgrades, it helps to understand where heat actually escapes. According to the Energy Saving Trust, an uninsulated home loses approximately 25% of its heat through the roof, 35% through the walls, and between 10% and 20% through inefficient windows and doors.
Older windows – particularly single-glazed units or degraded uPVC frames – lack the technology to resist heat transfer effectively. Over time, physical wear creates poor air seals around frame openings, causing draughts that actively draw cold air into your living spaces.
When structural gaps are responsible for that level of heat loss, upgrading your boiler or adding new radiators simply won’t solve the underlying problem.
To help homeowners make informed choices, the UK operates a strict energy rating system administered by organisations such as the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC). Products are graded on an alphabetical scale from A++ down to E, based on their overall thermal performance.
Under updated UK Building Regulations (Part L), replacement windows must now meet specific performance targets. These are measured using a U-value – a figure that indicates how quickly heat passes through a material. The lower the U-value, the more effective the window is at preventing heat loss.
Choosing frames and glass that meet or exceed current standards ensures your installation complies with building regulations while maximising your long-term energy savings.
Modern double glazing and triple glazing are now extremely close in terms of energy performance. Because of this, we generally do not recommend triple glazing as standard, as the value difference between double and triple glazing is not usually worth the additional cost.
That being said, we can provide triple glazing for customers who want to achieve the highest level of thermal efficiency possible, or for projects where triple glazing is specifically required.

The frame you choose matters just as much as the glass itself. Today’s uPVC frames are a world apart from the hollow profiles of older installations, which allowed cold air to chill the frame from within.
Modern uPVC profiles are built with cleverly engineered multi-chambered interiors. These internal chambers trap pockets of still air inside the frame, interrupting the path of heat conduction and dramatically improving insulation.
Whether you prefer a sleek contemporary casement or a traditional sliding sash for a period home, modern uPVC delivers excellent structural stability, requires minimal maintenance, and provides a consistently tight seal against the elements.
Energy efficiency improvements deliver two clear benefits: they protect your household budget and reduce your environmental impact.
By upgrading to high-performance windows and doors, you reduce the amount of gas or electricity needed to keep your home warm – insulating yourself against the impact of rising energy prices in the process.
Lowering your heating demand also directly reduces your household carbon footprint. For homeowners thinking about adding renewable technology such as solar panels or heat pumps, properly insulating your property first means those systems operate at their best – using far less energy overall.

Every property is different, which is why general advice will only take you so far. Achieving the best results means considering the specific layout, orientation, and age of your home.
At Emerald, we provide straightforward, no-pressure advice to help you choose the ideal combination of glass and frames for your property. Our experienced team manages everything from initial assessments to precise installation, ensuring your new windows and doors provide a perfect fit and lasting performance.
